Fall Season Smartphone Wars: Samsung’s Galaxy S3 Vs Apple’s iPhone 5

Setting aside the court litigation, let us settle the differences by comparing their products side by side. We will compare the best of their products, iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3, through different aspects like size, camera quality, processor speed, memory and other hardware aspects. From this, we can settle a score on each category and add up the total points on who is the best of the best in the smartphone market.

And in the left corner, from Cupertino, California, Apple’s flagship smartphone, the iPhone 5! The challenger, from Seoul, South Korea, Samsung’s Galaxy S3! Let the games begin!

Round 1: Physical Design – For this round, we will see the build quality of each smartphone. The iPhone is always made up of aluminum and up until its recent generation, they retained the same material for their casing. On the other hand, the S3 is made up of sturdy plastic. Comparing the build of each, aluminum is far more rigid compared to its plastic counterpart. Moreover, the iPhone 5 is thinner by 1 mm compared to its competitor. Clearly, the iPhone 5 wins this round.

Round 2: Screen Size – Since all smartphones were designed for multitasking, a bigger screen is much better. The S3 boasts a 4.8 inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels whilst the iPhone 5 has only taken a little step from its predecessor, with a screen size of 4 inches and a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels. Given this, S3 has an edge on giving out high quality graphics as compared to the iPhone 5. S3 wins round 2! realme 5 pro

Round 3: Processing power – a device would not perform well if its processing unit cannot keep up with the rest of the hardware. The iPhone 5 used their newest processor, the A6 dual-core chip with a processing speed of 1.2GHz, which generally delivers a faster response when opening iOS apps. The S3 on the other hand has a more powerful processor, the Cortex-A9 quad-core processor that has a CPU clock of 1.4GHz. Given such processing power, S3 nonetheless can execute resource heavy applications without any difficulties. S3 scores again!

Round 4: Battery – of course, a smartphone’s capability is dependent on its battery capacity. The better the battery capacity, the better it can serve its owner. Samsung’s S3 has a battery life of 590 hours if the phone is on standby. iPhone 5 on the other hand has improved its battery life compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 now has a 225 hour battery life. Unfortunately, this doesn’t hold a candle to the battery capacity of the S3. So, for this round: iPhone 5: 0; S3: 1.

Round 5: Camera – Finally, a smartphone would not be a smartphone if it does not have a camera. Both the S3 and the iPhone have an 8 megapixel camera on their backs which can record HD videos. Additionally, their front-facing cameras have almost the same pixel capacity – iPhone 5 has a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera while the S3 has a 1.9 megapixel front camera – with the S3 having a little edge. Though nothing much can be discerned on the differences of their camera build and at the same time the quality of their images, it can be concluded that this round can be called a draw.

For the final reckoning, the overall score is: Samsung Galaxy S3: 3; iPhone 5: 1. As you can see, Samsung does have an edge over some of the common technologies that could be found on most smartphones. Based on the evidences above, it can be assured that there is no bias in this review.
